Humanities week 2012
From 18th – 22nd June is Year 8 Humanities week and this year’s theme is the Israel/Palestine conflict. We are very lucky to have Together4peace (a Leeds based charity that work to develop cooperative projects to strengthen communities and promote peace) delivering the PSHE lesson during which there will be a live link up to Palestine and also a Jewish guest speaker. Pupils will study different aspects of the conflict in their History, Geography and RE lessons.
Many other departments will be linking in with the Israel/Palestine conflict theme during humanities week. In English, pupils will have the opportunity to study poetry from the perspectve of both Jewish and Muslim children. They will then have the opportunity to produce either a rap to educate school kids about war, a persuasive letter to their PM to help end the conflict, a diary entry about their hopes for the future, a poem about families/friends being divided or an email to a friend abroad about their experiences of war. In Art, pupils will produce a Banksy-inspired installation piece and there will be some tasty Middle Eastern nibbles to sample in Food Technology. Canteen staff are also rustling up some delicious Middle Eastern food for us to try.
The theme will continue with various activities during form time and a conflict themed assembly will be delivered by year 12 pupils. We hope this will be a really valuable opportunity for pupils to explore the topic of conflict and peace.
