Post 16 Bursary

WHAT IS THE BURSARY FUND?

The 16-19 Bursary Fund is designed to help support young people who face the greatest financial barriers to participation in education and training. The fund is split into 2 parts: –

1 – VULNERABLE BURSARY

A Vulnerable Bursary is available to all learners who fall into one of the vulnerable groups identified below and are eligible to receive £1,200 a year:

Young people in care

Care leavers

Young people in receipt of Income Support or Universal Credit themselves

Young people in receipt of Employment Support Allowance or Universal Credit and Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments.

2 – DISCRETIONARY BURSARY

Garforth Academy will review each application where the family’s household income falls below £29,999 per year.

Under £25,000 you will be eligible for bursary.

£25,001 and below £29,999 per annum, your application will be individually considered*

Exceeds £30,000 per annum, you will not be eligible for bursary unless you are applying under exceptional circumstances.

*There is a limited amount of funding which may mean that we cannot support every application. Priority will be given to those students with the lowest household incomes and / or with the highest demonstrated need.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

To be eligible to apply for the fund, learners must:

Be aged under 19 years of age on 31 August 2023

  • Where a young person turns 19 during their programme of study, they can continue to be supported to the end of the academic year in which they turn 19 or to the end of the programme of study, whichever is sooner.

Be enrolled on a government funded course.
