SEND Intervention

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs

Small Social Communication Groups for years 7 and 8 – to build understanding of appropriate social skills for SEN students.

1:1 Mentoring support for years 7-13 – identified students experiencing mental health difficulties by SENCo and Learning Managers to support their well-being. Mentoring support is guided by the Educational Psychologist, CAMHS and other outside agencies. This support helps those students who may be struggling with anxiety, low mood, exam stress, sleep difficulties, accessing school, and transition.

In house STARS and ADHD support by a Level 3 qualified STARS Practitioner – for those with a recent autism and/or ADHD diagnosis, to help build their understanding of how this condition affects them and how to manage their differences, so they can reach their own individual potential.

Literacy

  • Accelerated Reader – available to all KS3 classes through their English lessons. Students have the opportunity to read for pleasure by loaning books from the ILC that are specifically targeted towards their reading age and interests. We have a range of ‘quick reads’ for reluctant readers who struggle with longer novels. We also have a range of dyslexia friendly books that are accessible in terms of layout and language, but with content that appeals to our teenage audience of secondary school pupils.
  • Ruth Miskin – a number of students will receive phonics and reading fluency intervention in small groups, using the Fresh Start programme. This is delivered by a phonics specialist who gets students through the programme as quickly as possible, so they are able to decode and read word sounds. Students who graduate from phonics will then move onto our Rapid Plus intervention.
  • Rapid Plus – a guided reading programme delivered to students in small groups. Students read a range of books that increase in challenge and length. The books help to develop student’s vocabulary and comprehension and are supplemented by a variety of tasks to secure their understanding. It is used to bridge students’ independence between Ruth Miskin and Reading Plus, or alternatively used for students who struggle to read independently in online interventions.
  • Reading Plus- an intuitive reading programme used to improve students’ reading ages. This is available to a number of students who need intervention and are able to engage in an independent programme both in and out of school. All of the texts are online, and it improves students’ reading fluency, speed and comprehension. This all has a huge impact on working memory as well.

Maths

Selected Y7 and Y8 students will be offered the chance to join our Step-Up programme.

The step-up Programme is designed to support pupils who are not secondary-ready.  The materials have been designed to be taught as a stand-alone course or programme for a particular set of targeted pupils.   This ‘Step-up Programme’ consists of 5 units of work for a full year programme of mathematics for approximately half an hour a week.   These units cover the teaching objectives essential to moving pupils to becoming secondary-ready in mathematics. The objectives have been organised into teaching units that can be matched to and integrated with the yearly teaching programme for Year 7. Of course, pupils are not necessarily at the same level of attainment in all their mathematical work.  For this reason, the ‘Step-up Programme’ is carefully planned so that it will support pupils with their mathematical understanding in the main teaching programme.  The materials include practice exercises and some more demanding tasks called Star Challenges. Rewards will be issued to pupils who access the Star Challenges.
